“Pilates aims to strengthen the body in an even way, with particular emphasis on core strength to improve general fitness and wellbeing” https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/guide-to-pilates/
I believe that is what we attempt to achieve for our psychological wellbeing in psychotherapy.
At times in our lives we can feel destabilised by certain events. We can lose our balance regarding what is true, what we believe to be true and what we are creating in our minds. This can feel deeply upsetting and disorientating as we lose sight and memory of our objective truths, such as our kindness or intelligence. I believe these objective truths can form a core strength: If we can learn how to recognise them, strengthen them and then hold them, these truths are available to us at times of wobble, just as our core muscles will restabilise us in a pilates exercise. Psychotherapy can help return the natural balance by reconnecting us with the core of our self.
Good therapy helps us to understand our process: What drives us? Why do we react in certain ways? Why do some comments hurt more that others? By gaining insight into these factors we can achieve a freedom to choose how we respond rather than react out of awareness. We have thereby gained strength and flexibility.
